The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
